Twelve new members of theOrder of Manitoba have been announced today, eight of which are University ofManitoba graduates, staff members or are closely connected with the University.
These are:
Yhetta Miriam Gold, advocate for seniors and thedisabled (graduate of the U of M);
Kevin Kavanagh,business leader and philanthropist (graduate of the U of M);
Guy Maddin,filmmaker, presently filmmaker-in-residence at the U of M;
Roland Mahe,French language promoter (graduate of the U of M);
Sylvia Ostry,economist and first woman appointed as a federal deputy minister (HonoraryDegree recipient, 1986);
Frank Plummer,international expert in infectious diseases and professor of medicalmicrobiology (graduate of the U of M);
Corrine Scott,advocate for women in policing (graduate of the U of M);
Emőke Szathmáry,president emeritus of the University of Manitoba.
Established by the Order ofManitoba Act in 1999, this is the province’s highest honour. It recognizesindividuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field ofendeavour, benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economicwell-being of Manitoba and its residents.
